Roger deCarnac: I am skeptical like a Moldovan project manager: I know he is trying to swindle me, just haven't worked out how yet.
DanielB: RogerC. I have a new Corp with no synergies and $27 to burn. It’s early (3rd round. I need more commitment in your reply. Otherwise I may just let Amos have it and he just might not sell it to you so he can buy in a Corp to himself with MS
DanielB: He would do that to Provos himself with liquidity. (mS forms Saturn at $18, buys in HE for $18)
DanielB: Provide
DanielB: The $6 of income you are getting from HE and Bear then you make until maintenance costs overwhelm Bear in round 8- when they rise to $7 each. You’ll have the nuts throww round 5 and strentgh in 6/7.
DanielB: If you also buy bd from me in the subsequent round your HE will generate $8 of income
DanielB: Per turn
DanielB: Ie in rounds 4-5 you generate $16 of income alone. What’s more. You can buy a third share of this Bear behemoth right now. So are you gonna f-imf commut or not? I’d love to have 75 percent of something making $16 of income a turn with 7 stars as a base just to start with. He-bd—by—kme. 3 shares. Friggin beautiful
DanielB: You can become a dividend machine. Paying yourself for those 3 shares $12 a round beginning in round 4. That’s $24 of dividends going in to round 6 and liquidity to sell three shares for another $33 in round 6 or Better.
DanielB: Screw it. If you don’t buy em from me I’ll buy three companies from myself. Working together throws you and me way in front of Talb and Amos. I don’t need your liquidity. Your bear NEEDS my companies
DanielB: RogerC why on earth didn’t you buy your own share at $11. That’s what you set yourself up to do isn’t it?
DanielB: Selling a share does no good. It neta you 8 or $9. Not enough for KK. Deploy capital efficiently man, that’s the name of the game!
DanielB bids $14 for HE
Roger deCarnac: I was just messing with you man.
Roger deCarnac: but I got a lot of free advice in the balance.
Roger deCarnac: why didn't I buy the share? I considered it and even wanted to. my problem still in this game is that I do not know enough about what is coming down the pike. The rule book is not written for novices (the author says as much in the intro). stars are not explained; nothing is really explained. It reminds me a bit when we played 1835 with the game author and all of his friends. Everyone acted like of course I knew what was going on because I had of course read the rules or at least understood them. Never saw the rules. And the explanation they provided was as if I had played dozens of games of that type before.
Roger deCarnac: just face it, you are going to have to train me up a lot more before I can become a worthy opponent.
Roger deCarnac: but answer me this: why should I pay max for those companies? why not offer me a small discount?

Roger deCarnac: I couldn't select any IPO price. Is it because I did not have the right about of cash?
DanielB: Yes. 6 plus 29 is $35. U needed 36 to float at 18
Roger deCarnac: I still dont get it. For example, from the table below, it would seem that if Amos contributes 2 bucks, the treasury would be 29 and the price 27
DanielB: That's exactly correct... What's not to get? Your DR is worth $29. You have $6. Together that's $35. $35 is a dollar short to float at $18 (you'd receive two shares at $18, company would receive two shares at $18 + the $7 cash you'd need to contribute (total cash of $43)... If Amos chose the same par for PKP, treasury is $47 because PKP's value is $4 less. Due to the blockage at $16 par value, you were prohibited from floating...that was vorhersehbar when you understand the mechanics..(though it wasn't certain a stock would occupy the $16 spot, it wasn't unlikely give that Bear was at $13 I believe....
Roger deCarnac: thanks. again. nowhere is anything explained. the rule book is nothing of the sort.
Roger deCarnac: you may think it is obvious because you have played this and other similar games many times. This is my first one.

DanielB: Roger. It’s really quite dangerous to buy in for so much less than max. It binds you to your shares and itf you don’t have enough of them your still f’d.

DanielB: You gave bear at least an $8 discount and you only own 20 percent of Bear. Now you may have to defend bear though probably only Amos is a threat and Bear isn’t probably juicy enough yet

Talbatross: I just checked, you held money in the 6p game by accident
Roger deCarnac: ok, he'll dump an eagle then
Talbatross: I think the turning point in this game was the DR purchase. I think Roger was in prime position to win before that.
DanielB: which 6p game?>
DanielB: the abandonment of bear is amazing...
Talbatross: Well it dies this round theoretically does it not?
Roger deCarnac: As this is my first game to come this far, I did not recognise it. Maybe I should have bought more Bear instead of the dead-end Soviet railways ...
Talbatross: Game 870 Daniel
Talbatross: all good, for your limited experience you are doing pretty well Roger.
Roger deCarnac: I kept making the mistake with the stock prices (you don't get to buy/sell for the current price, but it depends on the prices of other stocks, etc.). Now I think I've got it. I still haven't worked out why one should care about stars, but Daniel keeps bringing them up, so I guess they are significant.
Roger deCarnac: Also - could someone remind me of the end game conditions? How is it triggered and then how does it finally end? thanks
Roger deCarnac: (and I am using "finally" as in finality - not that I am anxious for it to end)
Talbatross: Game end is triggered when all companies are bought. We then play one more round and then a winner is declared. Cost of operation is applied to everything except blue in the last round.
Talbatross: So this is probably going to be 11 or 12 rounds
Roger deCarnac: Thanks. Is there an end-game option if a stock price is reached?
Talbatross: oh right, I think it ends that way too.
Talbatross: basically at the end of that round, so we don't play anything additional IIRC
Talbatross: since Check game end is Phase 7, which is after the stock price adjustments
Roger deCarnac: So for example, I would have to go above 75, right? And that would trigger and immediate end?
Talbatross: I believe hitting 75 triggers it
Talbatross: From the Phase 7 rules: "If there are no unowned companies left, flip the game end card. If it is already flipped, or if the $75 share price card is owned by a corporation, the game ends."

Amos Cai: I couldn’t. Roger led with 49
Talbatross: oh
Talbatross: I missed that in between all this chat
DanielB passes
DanielB: interesting... this game is wide open... Amos is a bit behind, but he makes the most money this round...and is the only one whit two companies... Talb has the best chance, because he makes $20 with CDG...and get's it into Saturn, perfect... we are dead
Roger deCarnac bids $43 for E
DanielB: Oh no. David. I had an idea for you. Damn. Buy star. Dividend $15 a share. Then come in to next round with $34 cash and two shares of liquidity
Roger deCarnac: I thought we had to buy stuff... I will get the hang of this one day ...
Roger deCarnac: you can buy E from me for 57 if you want ;)
Talbatross leaves auction

Saturn buys CDG for $80 from Talbatross
DanielB: goodbye!
DanielB: Amos, do you remember when you overbid me on PKP, paying $26 for that Yellow? -- I think that put you back.. you didn't have synergies for it... and DSB which also had no synergies, was $6 cheaper.... do you recall why you overbid me?
DanielB: Amos, I'm afraid that dumping Saturn to takeover Bear, didn't actually work... and Talb was able to take advantage of it...
DanielB: I didn't think it was too bad at the time, i'm just trying to figure out how Talb got his edge...
Talbatross: I am still very capable of blowing this game I'd say
Talbatross: I was able to harvest Eagle for cheap
Talbatross: and take saturn
Talbatross: got good benefit out of bear
Talbatross: I think before that I was doing decently with a company but not great.
DanielB: Wow. If u both buy companies we will be done at the end of round 11
Talbatross: Could be the thing to do

Star changes share price from $41 to $50
Saturn pays $5 dividends - Talbatross receives $5
Saturn changes share price from $30 to $24

Bear changes share price from $22 to $16
Bear passes
Orion pays $3 dividends - DanielB receives $6
-- Round: 9 Phase: 7 (Check Game End) --
-- Round: 9 Phase: 8 (Issue New Shares) --
DanielB: Roger. I’ll pay a lot for E. More than its $-3 income and four stars is with to Star. I’m not sure where that number should be. North of $45 and south of $55 I think
DanielB: E makes $7 this round and -$3 next round, $5 if you get HA in. That’s $12 and 4 stars ostensibly. How about $53 for E this round?
DanielB: You can buy one or two Jupiter shares and ride along to victory. (Or neck and neck). Buy a blue or a Jupiter. Pay crazy high star dividends and liquidate next turn... endless opportumities
Star issues a share and receives $45
Star changes share price from $50 to $45
Roger deCarnac: 53 for E, ok
Roger deCarnac: Will I still be first in phase 1, next round?
DanielB: If u have most leftover money...
Orion passes
-- Round: 9 Phase: 9 (Form Corporations) --
Roger deCarnac: looks like I will not
DanielB forms corporation Jupiter with LHR at $37 - 4 shares issued.
DanielB: I maximized cash for two reasons. 1, gives me enough to perhaps offer also for a second green from you, or for HA. 2, so Talb couldn’t buy MAD and a share of Jupiter.
DanielB: Turns out it’s really nice for Amos who can float at $33. Which seems okay
DanielB: And roger if u buy a share. You wo t have to pay a double bump.
Roger deCarnac: double bump? Do you mean if someone floated at 50 and then I would have to pay 55 for a share of Star?
Roger deCarnac: aha, got it. If I buy a share of Jupiter
Amos Cai: You mean floating RENFE at $33 yes? I'm confused
Roger deCarnac: I think that is what he means. But I am a greenhorn, so don't act based on what I understood. ;)
HR passes
Amos Cai forms corporation Eagle with RENFE at $33 - 2 shares issued.
-- Round: 10 Phase: 1 (Auctions And Share Trading) --
Amos Cai: Daniel, did you think that I should form RENFE at $33, issue a share, and then buy HR for max value? I'm trying to understand what you meant.
DanielB: Yes. I left you that possibility which was very nice of me. And yes I think that was your best oppoartunity. Always use other people’s moneyto pay yourself. If you can
DanielB: Oh. I think I meant hr. And buy fence. Or at $30 with hr. Since you want to do the purchase now. As it stands you don’t have enough capital to buy it
Amos Cai: yeah. I think I did not think through the phases properly. More thought needs to go into internalising the structure of the game on my part.
Roger deCarnac: So, why should I buy a Jupiter instead of a Star? Or instead of trying to get one of the companies? Is it because if I buy Jupiter, it is likely others will push it over 50 and thereby I will get added goodies without spending the money?
Star changes share price from $45 to $50
Roger deCarnac buys share of Star for $50
Roger deCarnac: How does the upkeep work? when will greens become costly? And what will be the upkeep then?
Talbatross bids $50 for MAD
Talbatross buys MAD for $50 from the bank
Amos Cai passes
DanielB: Jupiter has upward momentum because it will get two greens. That’s why. But buying star works. Dividend strategy
DanielB: Sure wish you would have bid against Talb.
DanielB: He has a $16 synergy now he can realize
DanielB passes
Roger deCarnac: I could not have bid against him. But rather opened the bid to get MAD. Eventually, he would have gotten it if he really wanted it
Roger deCarnac passes
Saturn changes share price from $24 to $22
Talbatross sells share of Saturn for $22
Saturn goes into receivership
Talbatross: kinda winging this endgame, I think Roger got this? Good transition to a strong green company in the end.
Roger deCarnac: Daniel was expecting you to have MAD and CDG in the same boat, I think. I guess you are going to HA to start the end game? This is all very interesting for a "little" card game!
Talbatross: I can at least get MAD and HA and get guaranteed 20 income a round, I don't think that's better than what you're going to get this round, though Star is going to suffer the last round
Roger deCarnac: When do the big upkeep costs kick in and how much are they? The tutorial seems to be for ver 1
Talbatross: it will switch in phase 7
DanielB: Upkeep it tame in V.2. We are in the penultimate phase.
Talbatross: so you can still pay out well this round
Roger deCarnac: Daniel wants to buy E from me, apparently. I guess either to help me win or to get synergies.
DanielB: Once, HA is bought (the last company), the upkeep will remain $7 on all but green and Blue. In the following round (last round), it will be $10 for all but Blue
Talbatross: I'm amused, don't think I've seen a 5star blue company ever.
Roger deCarnac: So, it means that if I dividend out on Star and leave it with no money, it will go bankrupt and the share will be worth zero, right?
Roger deCarnac: (I still don't understand the star thingy and why we should care about that. It is not clear to me)
DanielB: possibly... you dividend after maintenance is paid... so it only affects the following round... and in that time, someone can slide it money by buying a company from it, or it may issue a share if it has any left
Talbatross: Star still has a share left so it should be ok.
Talbatross: though your stock will drop
Roger deCarnac: ok, thanks guys
Talbatross: though I guess you could also not issue a share and that would kill it
Talbatross: but if you don't have shares in it before income who cares I guess?
Roger deCarnac: I dont think I want to kill it.
Roger deCarnac: sure, if I dump my shares. Can I dump more than one on my turn?
Talbatross: only 1 at a time
Talbatross: so in your current situation it would be sell for 45, then next turn sell for 41
Roger deCarnac: ok, but as long as I do not pass I can keep doing it, correct?
DanielB: Rog- I'd be delighted if I can pay Star you $72 for E and SZD. Then you can do a full dividend ($16 per share), and sell both your shares and buy Jupiter/other shares. It might be a winning strategy... T
Talbatross: well as long as everybody doesn't pass you can do it :D
Talbatross: I'd be pretty sad if deals were made with Daniel at this juncture, I feel like he has the strongest corp control.
Roger deCarnac: I am curious why you want them. I understand E (synergy), but not the soviet railways
DanielB: Talb, let's see, I have $110 invested in corps, and you have $0. Yeah, I guess I have more invested
Talbatross: :_
Talbatross: 72 for E and SZD seems like stealing, greens are 4 star values in a corp so that's like $40 in value just from the company alone.
DanielB: David, I don't think I'd sell, probably better off dividending max, selling next turn...though buying Star at $50 seems like it was a mistake, since you agreed to a deal with Jupiter for "E", I didn't understand why you didn't buy a Jupiter share....
DanielB: bid ask spreads are death in Rolling Stock. Just frequently necessary to pay... But paying that spread unnecessarily is usually death...
DanielB: this little card game is designed to ruthlessly punish every infraction.... nice isn't it, You'll have to meet the sweetest 2m guy in the world, Bjoern (who lives in Berlin)
Roger deCarnac: Daniel, some things you are not meant to understand. Such as the random walks of a Rolling Stock greenhorn
Roger deCarnac: ... again about the stars. Is that explained somewhere? If he bought it, he would get 4 stars... and then what? I still do not see how the stars affect anything
Roger deCarnac: I guess I was trying to have my cake and eat it too. Buy Star - thereby having 2 shares, so I could get 22 from dividends. Get cash from you for 1-2 companies, which would enable me to dividend even more. Then I could buy Jupiter.
Roger deCarnac: But I guess if I sell some companies, I lose some stars, which ... does what, exactly?
DanielB: you can only dividend 1/3rd your share price. So at $45 share price, you could dividend $15 a share, and at $50 share price you can dividend $16 a share. Green companies = 4 stars. So when you sell "E" for $53, you gain 1.3 stars....if you sell a green under $40, you lose stars...you dividend, you lose stars... which affects how your share price adjusts... But usually, when you do a massive dividend, you don't have enough remaining stars to climb, unless your company has raided cheap assets and is very undervalues
DanielB: undervalued
DanielB: if I were in your shoes, I'd sell E for 53, driving cash to 46+53+14(income) = 113- dividend ($64) = $49 cash = 4 stars, + two greens = 8 stars + "star bonus" = 2 stars =14 stars...at 14 stars you fall to $41 ( so if you give away another green (to jupiter hopefull), it won't affect your return on star... then you can sell for $37 and $33...($70 + $32 on dividend) $2 profit... that's terrible... but that's how big a mistake it was to buy Star at $50.... Maybe we roll back to that decision...since your new, and you didn't understand the math...what do you think guys?
Roger deCarnac: no, no need to roll back. I can do math. it's all the little fiddly rules that I need to get up to speed on.
Roger deCarnac: not exactly a $2 profit. I didn't get the first share for 50, only the second one
Roger deCarnac: anyways, don't roll anything back. I will never learn otherwise. Not everyone can have a wall street investment banker life, where our screw ups will all be covered by the taxpayer
Talbatross: What’s the math for Daniel?
Roger deCarnac: He can do it ... ;)
Talbatross: that is the problem I'd say ;)
Talbatross: that is the eternal struggle, doing all the maths for both sides of deals.
DanielB: you all are free to join the Jupiter hit parade...Talb... i'm not sure two blues get's you to a promised land...maybe you can resteal cdg, but then you need another companyu...i think your closing the yellow was a giant mistake...
Talbatross: probably not in this case, I kinda agree that I needed some other corp to be able to pair with for more value.
DanielB: yeah... V2 - has strange dynamics andlate game things i haven't quite figured out...it's hard to climb up... dilution seems to matter more... i struggled with whether or not to float Jupiter at $30,33 or 37... Roger, probably best to sell a star and buy a jupiter considering the E deal... and aligning our incentives... Jupier should end up at $61 or $68 at the end of round 11...so buying it $41 should be a decent return
DanielB: that's probably too optomistic... 13 stars plus cash and if you'll sell a two greens to jupiter....then it'd be possible... what if I promised to let you buy the 2nd share next turn as incnetive... i'll try to take over Saturn...and move cdg..? or vice versa...
DanielB: too many yelllow and oranges got closed... thin pickings
DanielB: Gentlemen, shall we rev up a V1 for Roger, who's game? I could reach out to Bjoern or Weiswurst for a 5th?
Roger deCarnac: dont chuck me in the deepend already. Plus, some sharks do not like the randomness of a novice.
DanielB: V2 was originally know. As the “family-friendly” variant
Amos Cai passes
Amos Cai: It's ok Roger. I'm very noob and they've all been very kind with advice yet letting me suffer for my own mistakes.
Amos Cai: I had only just starting dipping my toes in 18xx maybe half a year ago and now I'm getting spanked around by this game. Still trying to wrap my head around it.
DanielB passes
Roger deCarnac: Daniel's been playing 18xx games for decades. I played one once with him and the designer of 1835 and their friends.
DanielB: 26 1/2 years ago!
Roger deCarnac: all right, I will try it your way ...
Star changes share price from $50 to $45
Roger deCarnac sells share of Star for $45
Talbatross: Oh dear
Talbatross bids $46 for HA
Roger deCarnac: why "oh dear"? that I am following DB's advice?
Roger deCarnac bids $47 for HA
Talbatross: I always find Daniel's math to be win winner. You get an advantage but the advantage he gets is greater. Though I'm sure you're well aware of this ;)
Talbatross: you really want HA eh ?
Talbatross: oh btw I'm down for a V1 game, though I expect to die in it :)
Talbatross: I think I'm too spoiled by the ability to exit a company in V2
Talbatross bids $48 for HA
Roger deCarnac: yes, I am sure he has worked it out to his greater benefit. I just figured out the star thingy and its relation to share price. The formula in the corp thing is not clear
Roger deCarnac bids $49 for HA
Talbatross leaves auction
Roger deCarnac buys HA for $49 from the bank
Roger deCarnac: hoping you would get sucked in to 49 ;) no dice!
Talbatross: inded
Talbatross: The real question is what are you goin to do with ha?
Talbatross: Has a synergy with E
Roger deCarnac: yeah, maybe I shouldnt sell it now? ;)
Roger deCarnac: Daniel will take revenge in version 1!
Roger deCarnac: this is why sharks do a nut with beginners
DanielB: Roger - I can up my offer for E to $54, and offer you $61 for HA (Max), next round....
DanielB: then you can sell star and buy jupiter... and maybe something else... i might then buy star to move the last green out... helping your jupiter share...
Roger deCarnac: ok. at least I will be miserable in comfort!
Roger deCarnac: should I do it guys? Are we curious how he will pull it off? Or should we let him sit on his 90 bucks plus 11 income? :)
Talbatross: either way he still pays out himself, probably getting 18 bucks from jupiter and 8 bucks from orion
Talbatross: assuming you don't work with him
Talbatross: and assuming he's paying out in full
Talbatross: I probably just did the math wrong there
Talbatross: that's also not counting stock appreciation
Talbatross: pretty sure Orion goes down but I dunno about Jupiter
Talbatross: point is, if you have a path that equals or makes more than that then that is what you should follow
DanielB: if you don't work with me I buy BR for $18, Jupiter income is $27 this round, and if nothing good happens, $17 next round. If you honor the "E" deal, then income is $51 this turn, and $31 next turn, ...so clearly, the Jupiter share will be giant... that combined with buying in HA (makes income of Jupiter $49 in last round)... life is good
Roger deCarnac: He wants 4, 8 or 9 stars from me; with LHR, that gives him 14 stars without the cash. He needs more to get his stock price up, which is what he is counting on. Orion gets dumped, Jupiter price through the roof. I will do the math tomorrow. good night for now!
Roger deCarnac: this is all just table talk. I am having a go at you man. I can honour the deal to see how this all works and see the magic happen

DanielB: Roger. If u float at $30. I can buy a share at $33. Then again. You won’t have anything to do with the leftover money.
DanielB: You’ll have to do the exact math
Roger deCarnac: how many shares do I get when I float? Just 1 and the other 3 go to the bank?
Roger deCarnac: (sorry to ask such a basic thing, but previously I just went with whatever happened. Now I am keenly interested!)
Talbatross: If the company you use to start the Corp is worth more than the share price, you will end up getting more shares and more shares start issued
Talbatross: For HA’s case, starting at 30, ha has 16 more value, so another share is issued and you make up the difference of 14 bucks
Talbatross: That 14 bucks goes into the treasure along with the 60 dollars in issued shares that the bank does
Talbatross: So you get 2 shares worth since you put in 60 dollars of value in the corp
Talbatross: And the bank matches you contribution into the treasury
Talbatross: Hope that answers your question
Roger deCarnac: Thanks

Amos Cai: I'm not sure. I figured it someone was going to buy HR for full value or close to, then I didn't need to do it myself. And I could get a share that might gain more in value.
Roger deCarnac: What do you mean Daniel?
Roger deCarnac: destruction of whom? himself? or you want to destroy him now?
Roger deCarnac: guess Amos should sell to Daniel if he got a share of Jupiter
Roger deCarnac passes
Roger deCarnac: Amos - if it is not too late, I would like to not buy HR from you. Daniel can buy it. If it is too late, I will buy it. But I think it is not a good deal for me. I lose a star from it. Daniel has a better reason to buy it and you will get a good deal of cash.
Talbatross passes
Jupiter changes share price from $61 to $50
DanielB sells share of Jupiter for $50
DanielB: Amos, this surprising turn of actions is entirely your making. I'm not sour, but understand, when you dumped the Eagle, you had set up to buy in your own HR, you blocked my ability to put my money to work ($34)...Then your purchase of Jupiter, meant that I could no longer rise in price (look at the Stars needed at $61, it was like 26 or 27, and I had 19 stars only, with income of $31, so I could pay a $20 dividend, from $61 for a total return of $50 + $20 = $70 (+$9).... but not put to work my $34 accept buying one lone share of SAturn that will make a few dollars
DanielB: Now Jupiter is back to $50, and it can go up, or pay a massive dividend.... still , your purchase at $61 was not to your benefit, relative to what could have been...
DanielB: and Gentlemen: that is what I meant, when I responded "Destruction"... self-destruction - Rolling Stock sets the traps as well as any game, doesn't it?
DanielB: Paying the bid-ask spread difference of $11 was far to high at this juncture... Now what I will do, is to do something that doesn't help Talbatross and Roger... As it stood, I thought Roger had the game, now I'm not so sure...
DanielB: But Roger should have dividended much more with Star last turn...
Amos Cai passes
Amos Cai: I did not know that the number of purchased shares would increase the number of stars required to raise the share price. I'm trying to find out where in the learning the game/player's guide it is, but can't quite find it.
Amos Cai: I believe you are saying that you would have bought Horse(?) so that when Roger dividends, you would get a share of the dividends and that Roger was likely to win because both Star and Horse had a lot of cash to dividend out.
Roger deCarnac passes
DanielB: its' not the number of purchased shares, its the SHARE PRICE. The share price is harder to move up, the higher it goes. You must play V.1 to understand this directly. The stars obfiscates the mechancis. but look at each corp, and look at the table at the right indicating how many stars it needs to ascend. The formula is roughly shares issued x stock price divided by 10 is the number of stars you need to go up.
DanielB: So if you had a $20 stock price, and 4 shares outstanding (like Saturn in this game), you'd need 8 stars to stay in place, 9 stars to go up once and 10 stars to double jump (because $24 x 4)/10 = 10 (stars).....
Roger deCarnac: Yes, I should have dividended more (or at all) with Star last turn. But that is my fault not understanding the limits on the dividend thingy. No worries. Like I said, it will still take several games before I am even a fair player. I am still in this game due to tips for others and a bit of luck.

Amos Cai passes
Amos Cai: Well, I feel like I'm learning things about the game, though I'm not sure I'm playing better. How about you Roger? I think with your greater experience at 18xx, it's smoother for you.
Roger deCarnac: Amos - I played 1835 just one time - with the designer and playtesters, including Daniel, about 26 years ago. That was my experience with 1835. It kind of horrified me. Mostly because I was then and still am the one that reads the rules in any gaming group and I was having the game explained to me "on the fly" by absolute pros. "Let's just start and you'll figure it out". I think they thought I was a total half-wit and they were right!
Roger deCarnac: Since we are not track-laying or buying loks, this is definitely smoother. The card version of 18xx. I think Daniel has the benefit of intuition from having played this a lot. And if he doubts his intuition, he checks it with math. That will be difficult to beat. It will take me several more games to get the hang of it. But that is the bonus of these online games. We can do several and the computer handles all the fiddly stuff.
Roger deCarnac passes
Amos Cai: well, I'm glad to be in games and learning. I don't mind being scolded, etc., cos that's how I'll learn, or possibly learn. The only way to learn in brutal games is to get beat down. I'm just not sure sometimes that I'm spending enough effort trying to grok the game because finance isn't intuitive to me (not my day job).. Will try to spend more time to think about it.
Roger deCarnac: Not my day job either. I think DB wants people to play with, so is willing to scold/school a new batch of people. Not everyone is willing to do that. Many do not want the "randomness" of an inexperienced player. So, hats off to DB for making the effort (though, at least in my case, his efforts will only pay off after several more games)
Talbatross passes
DanielB: thanks guy - pretty darn on the mark, the above comments, I especially like Roger's (if he doubts his intuition, he checks it with math)...
DanielB: so my intuition is to buy the second share of Eagle... of course, at this price, that may make things harder for Eagle (i'd have to hurt Jupiter more), so it's possible i should check it with math, and consider the alternative of buying a share of HORSE, which is set up nicely for a big return... for example, Jupiter is likely to fall to $41 (after paying a $16 dividend), if i buy Horse, it will be at $33, jump to $41, but then actually jump higher, because Star is at 41, of course, EAgle could be at $45, so Horse would jump to $50 (and I'll lose)...so maybe i better not buy Horse...

Roger deCarnac: You could always buy horse and then I would mess it up ...

Talbatross passes
DanielB: You could. But you’d lose star and not be able to raid it thereby making your 3 shares of horse overvalued

Amos Cai: so my move may have probably helped Daniel to win? if he does eventually win.
Talbatross: pretty sure he wins either way
DanielB: Amos, your sale of Eagle created problems for me, because it hindered my purchase of a horse share. Your subsequent purchase of Jupiter (at $61 no less), facilitated my sale of a Jupiter share at $5 higher, I had $6 left over, so I only gained $5 from your purchase of Jupiter....But your purchase of Jupiter reduced the return I could get on Jupiter shares, from $11 a share, to $9 a share. So instead, I sold one, dropping the Jupiter gain to $3, but buying for it, two shares of Eagle, which cost me $78, but netted me $126, a $48 gain, at the cost of $6 less gain in Jupiter, or call it ($18 less gain if I'd held Jupiter), in other words, I made $30 more on the portfolio changes, although I could have bought a saturn and made I beieve $3, so I made $27 more through my response, than I would if I'd stayed at 2 Jupiter shares at $61 and bought a Saturn at $22, and that $27 difference is certainly the difference in scores to Roger's
