Round: 9 Phase: 1 (Auctions And Share Trading)
luigicool bids $5 for KME
Jeffrey Pratt: I have to look at a rule book or something homey
cryptoglyph: I love this. I want more games that remind me of my day job.
luigicool: :-)
luigicool: Take all the time you need, I just wanted to start the game. The tutorial on the website is the basic rules
luigicool: Important to remember that corporations can purchase companies only from players
luigicool: That got me into a world of trouble
luigicool: Basically the players are like the middlemen between the corporations and the market for companies
luigicool: the foreign investor is sort of an AI player who is also mean and is a bit like the export/rusting mechanism
luigicool: so corporations can also purchase from it (it's like a player)
luigicool: and things here rust and rust badly, think train rush only worse
luigicool: We are playing the Rolling Stock stars version (v 2) which is more beginner friendly
luigicool: Never mind -- I just read on the tutorial that corporations can buy companies from other corporations as well as from players -- I still remember I screwed myself up some way... several times.. so you may want to take a look at the fine print
luigicool: https://github.com/beorn7/rolling_stock/blob/master/rules.pdf for the rules for v2
Jeffrey Pratt: I can't seem to get it to do anything
luigicool: Rolled back
luigicool: Jeff had made a mistake with the UI, so I rolled it back
luigicool: Jeff, regular auction, not like the one in 18XX
luigicool: Player on turn picks what to bid on, then regular auction
Jeffrey Pratt: My issue is I can't "pick' anything. KME is highlighted blue. No matter where I click on the screen, it doesn't highlight anything else. The only active buttons I have are the price box, the make bid button, and the pass button. Nothing else activates anything.
luigicool: The only options you have are to raise the bid on the auction of KME, which I started when it was my turn as first player, or pass and leave the KME auction. Once the KME auction is won it will be your turn and you will have the chance to select a different private company for auction
Jeffrey Pratt: OHHHH. Ok. Now it makes sense. You were right, my head was buried in 18xx and I couldn't see the forest for the trees lol
luigicool: Yes, the similarities with 18XX are dangerous, because the way it behaves is quite different. For example, when you pay dividends the share price goes down, issuing shares to the market is used to raise money, you pay and get the price after the change in price, etc...
luigicool: I am very curious about it because it is portable, it's about to be released, and Toby and Clearclaw are huge fans, so I want to give it a shot :-)
Joe: I dont understand the little boxes inside KME
luigicool: They are synergies. When a corporation owns KME and one of those companies in the little boxes, the corporation also gets that bonus. So if a corporation owns KME and BME, the income is $2+$1+ the bonus of $1
Jeffrey Pratt leaves auction
Jeffrey Pratt: Just read the rules. I have at least a general idea, but no real guiding light, lol. This looks really intersting.
luigicool: The guiding light can be found here http://rabenste.in/rollingstock/players_guide.pdf -- until I read the beginning of the Player's guide I did not understand what I was doing wrong. The rules are simple, but not falling in a death spiral is hard
luigicool: It's also interesting because the author explains why he designed it the way he did
luigicool: It's actually a brilliant design, I look forward to playing it with others, I only tried it alone against the "Foreign Investor"
Joe: Id like to call attention to the fact that the "players guide" is a text heavy 27pg document
Joe: Like a COIN playbook
Jeffrey Pratt: lol
cryptoglyph bids $6 for KME
Joe leaves auction
luigicool: Joe, that's why I did not read all of it, just the beginning :-)
luigicool bids $7 for KME
luigicool: The rules themselves can fit into a letter sized player aid, understanding what to do with those rules takes a 27 pages document :-D
cryptoglyph bids $8 for KME
luigicool leaves auction
cryptoglyph buys KME for $8 from the bank
Joe: Luigi, you said the rules fit on a single page, but the manual is 16 pages long are you using a different number system?
Joe: What was wrong in the tutorial? I can try to fix it. I submitted a pull request with a couple typos already, and it was approved.
luigicool: The text of Phase 4 is under Phase 5 and vice versa
luigicool: Joe, there is a concise manual at http://rabenste.in/rollingstock/rules.pdf and the turn sequence is from the bottom of p.1 to almost the bottom of page 2
luigicool: http://rabenste.in/rollingstock/ is where the original stuff is found, https://github.com/beorn7/rolling_stock is version 2 (the one being published now and the one we are playing)
luigicool: but yes, it's misleading to think it's a one page aid since after I read that I still didn't know what I was doing
Jeffrey Pratt bids $8 for MHE
Joe: Oh cool, I see it, I think I could fix that.
cryptoglyph bids $10 for MHE
Joe leaves auction

Joe bids $13 for BY
luigicool bids $14 for BY
Joe leaves auction
luigicool buys BY for $14 from the bank
Jeffrey Pratt bids $19 for PR
luigicool: All right, I have selected to skip Phase 4 for now, since there is no cost of ownership and nobody will have any interest to close companies at this time
Jeffrey Pratt: what do the stars mean Luigi, seems like it is from the new edition, but none of the rulebooks refer to them.
Joe bids $20 for PR
luigicool: The stars are the new edition way to determine the change in share value during the dividend phase
luigicool: https://github.com/beorn7/rolling_stock/blob/master/rules.pdf
luigicool: P.3, "adjust share price". Will be clear first time your Corp goes in that phase. More stars is better
Jeffrey Pratt bids $21 for PR
Joe bids $22 for PR
Jeffrey Pratt bids $23 for PR
Joe leaves auction
Jeffrey Pratt buys PR for $23 from the bank
Joe bids $11 for WT
luigicool bids $12 for WT
Joe bids $13 for WT
luigicool leaves auction
Joe buys WT for $13 from the bank
luigicool: Interesting, I had told it to bid until max, and i stopped one short of max...
luigicool: I guess what that option does is it bids one short of max...
Joe: I told it to bid to 16
luigicool: ah!
luigicool: Interesting, I'll have to figure this out next time
Joe: Did you put 13 or 14?
luigicool: I left what was there, I thought it would increment to the max of the range
luigicool: now I understand how it was uspposed to work....
luigicool: I got schooled
luigicool: Pity, I would have liked to have WT, but you would have won the auction anyway
Joe: Fyi, it doesn't appear to let you edit it. Once you set your max, its on auto
luigicool: I was going to go to 14
luigicool: good to know
Joe: The differences between this app and ythe 18xx one are interesting
luigicool: This is how the 18xx used to be I think, for example the rollback rolls back the chat
luigicool: This was Toby's first
luigicool: I am intrigued by this game, first time playing it for real, I am curious to see what happens next. I might make you a good offer for that WT, we'll see
luigicool: The ROI on the orange companies is less than on the red ones, but the revenue stream is longer
luigicool: What I am curious to see is how it will work with issuing shares -- you need to do it to raise capital but it makes you vulnerable to a takeover
cryptoglyph bids $7 for AKE
luigicool bids $8 for AKE
Joe leaves auction
luigicool buys AKE for $8 from the bank

BME passes
Joe: No point closing still, right?
cryptoglyph: Yeah, I don't think so.
cryptoglyph: (Everybody needs to adjust and save or keep and save their current skip settings).
luigicool: Closing starts making sense once we purchase yellow companies
luigicool: Before then there is no penalty
luigicool: O.Shane, if Bear is willing to pay $10 for AKE I will sell it to it
PR passes
cryptoglyph: I think I can only have the corporation pay its maximum value of $8.
cryptoglyph: Plus, right now the corporation only has $7
luigicool: Ah, I think you are right on both counts. I thought you might increase the cash in the corporation but you are probably right about the cap
luigicool: Time to issue some shares in that nice corporation :-)

luigicool: Jeff, whatever you do don't take the corp I want ;-) (as if I even knew which corp I want)
luigicool: And yes, they are all named after star constellations, hence the title of the game variant
luigicool: I think...
luigicool: no, never mind, scratch that
Jeffrey Pratt forms corporation Orion with PR at $13 - 4 shares issued.
luigicool forms corporation Eagle with BY at $16 - 2 shares issued.
WT passes
AKE passes
BSE passes
-- Round: 3 Phase: 1 (Auctions And Share Trading) --
luigicool passes
luigicool: I am really intrigued by this game, so far I don't have a sense of what is going to happen next, much better with 4 players than when I was just soloing to learn how not to die fast
luigicool: I also like the little automatisms like the auto pass, auto bid, etc, clever
cryptoglyph: Luigi, you might be right about the naming convention of the corporations: Ship could refer to the constellations Argo Navis, Carina or Vela. Horse could refer to Pegasus or Equuleus. Eagle could be Aquila. And Bear of course would be Ursa Major or Minor.
cryptoglyph: Meanwhile, in the same vein, I learned and taught Lucas FOR-EX last night. It's functionally the same category of game: abstract relative trading and arbitrage based on the personalities of the players (with different mechanisms). FOR-EX is fantastic. I think it might almost be a better intro in this category. Anyway, the JPY (shout out to 1889) ended up being the strongest currency. Lucas ended with 48 and change. I ended up with 53.5. Tight game.
luigicool: I always wanted to try For-Ex, looking forward to it.
luigicool: Must be a remnant of when I used to be an Econ major :-)
Joe: Im interested in For-Ex too. Looked it up after i saw it on the prize table at CC2018
Jeffrey Pratt passes
cryptoglyph bids $15 for OL
cryptoglyph buys OL for $15 from the bank
cryptoglyph: This game is still opaque to me but more translucent. I'm definitely buying a physical copy. It's cool.
luigicool: :-)
luigicool: I am curious to see what happens next, it's like watching a train wreck in slow motion
luigicool: I might be one round too slow to prevent a big problem with my cash flow
luigicool: BTW, nice job positioning your self for a no bids auction O.Shane
luigicool: Just a heads up everyone -- the Foreign Investor is a pain in the neck once it gets going
luigicool: Jeff, I'll sell AKE to Orion for $8
Jeffrey Pratt: Ill give you 5
luigicool: 7, take it or leave it
luigicool: Scratch that, I changed my mind, won't sell for less than $8
Jeffrey Pratt: I obviously barley understand what is happening, bit ti seems like I won't get 8 dollars out of it before it starts costing me money to keep it open.
luigicool: Jeff, I believe you are absolutely right, even with the synergy it's not attractive.
luigicool: It seems you grok this better than I do :-)
luigicool: However, keep in mind that each company owned by a corporation adds stars to it. I believe it's as simple as 1 for red, 2 for orange, and so on, but would need to verify. Then one star per each $10 in the treasury
luigicool: In this case, you would gain one star and lose one star so it would be a wash
luigicool: yeah, the more I type the more I realize you probably all grok it more than I do :-)
Jeffrey Pratt: lol
Joe: I’m interested in trying this again, once this game is over
Bear changes share price from $14 to $12
Joe sells share of Bear for $12
luigicool passes
luigicool: Yes Joe, I definitely want to try it again, I am barely scratching the surface and it's very interesting
luigicool: This is what BGG's Clearclaw said in his comment before giving this game a 9: "Here is sand. Here are some ways you can make things with sand. See what you can build! Oh, some of the sand is broken glass, you're bleeding uncontrollably and there's a Grue that eats people. No, I am not pouring ketchup on your head."
luigicool: I am fascinated by how everything is so interconnected, like the fact that Bear went down two spots due to Orion taking up a space and then you always get the amount after the change as if you were trading with some second rate slow broker who takes a nice cut on the trading floor
Jeffrey Pratt passes
Joe: I think of it more as the BID / ASK spread, but yeah this does a much better job of modeling reality

Eagle buys AKE for $8 from luigicool
Eagle offers $3 for BSE
cryptoglyph: Clearclaw (Jeff and I have met him in person) is nice enough but essentially a raving lunatic as pertaining to these games. He insists on being oblique in his metaphors essentially to delight his own sense of humor and pretends to convey messages as if they were easily understood. He is essentially the cult leader of 18xx, preaching the good news but when you go to his compound, all you have to eat are hex tiles and share certificates. In the grand scheme, harmless, though.
cryptoglyph: And apparently “essentially” is my word of the day :)
luigicool: :-)
Eagle offers $2 for BME
Bear declines to sell BME to Eagle for $2
Jeffrey Pratt: hahaha...Man, I couldn't have described clearclaw any more accurately than that.
luigicool: Interesting observations. I bet they are accurate too :-)

luigicool: O.Shane, are you sure that Bear does not want to sell that BME for top dollar? $2
luigicool: So hard to find a trading partner so far
cryptoglyph: Bear is following the Buffet-Munger model of value investing
cryptoglyph: I would have sold to you but as you know I need pairs to get the synergy
cryptoglyph: I’ll sell you BME andKME for $9
cryptoglyph: actually...belay that
cryptoglyph: BME and MHE for $12
cryptoglyph: no belay that too

Jeffrey Pratt: Orion gets to buy companies at face value from the foreign investor. you made the foreign investor out to be such a runaway train that I thought it would be a good pick. However we're halfway through the game, and not a single company has landed there, and now if they do go there, Orion couldn't afford them anyway. So it's been pretty much worthless, lol.
